Road Trip Kalispell

This weekend is a long weekend, we seem to have loads of them in Canada which is nice.  However, I have to admit that I have neglected my Internet business due to other commitments.  Yesterday we drove down into Montana to recover a friend's vehicle, this turned out to be a 14 hour task.

We left at 11:00 Saturday morning with a 3/4 tonne Dodge Ram Cummins and an 18 foot car hauler, our destination was Kalispell, Montana, and our task was to recover a Cheverolet Avalanche with a suspected seized engine.  It was 02:30 Sunday morning when we finally got back home to Raymond Alberta, it was a tough day but we "Got R Done".

The journey started off well, we headed off down to the US border with the empty trailer........ then lined up to cross for just over 2 hours.  We finally got our I-94 visas and headed South for Browning.  The route was up and down and round and round the mountains so we could not really make good time.

When we eventually got to the Dealership to collect the car we found that they had not left us enough space to maneuver the trailer to get the truck loaded.  After a lot of cussing and sweating we finally got the truck into a position where we could use the "Come along" (a type of hand cranked winch) to pull the stricken truck backwards up on to the trailer.  My wife did an excellent job of steering and i operated the winch, i am so glad we managed to get in on there on the first attempt (great job Jan).

The temperature as at about 37 degrees so you could imagine how hot and bothered we were by the time the truck was loaded and i had chained the thing down.  Before we headed North we stopped off at a Subway for the biggest drink they did and i must have emptied it twice before my thirst was quenched.

So with the truck on the trailer and a belly full of Iced (and I mean iced) Tea we set off for Alberta.  Half way back we had a blow-out on the trailer, and guess what, the trailer had no tools.  I managed to get the wheel off using the tools from the truck and luckily a passer-by stopped and his wheel brace fitted the spare wheel carrier.  Within the hour we were off again, by now the border crossing at Carway was closed so we had to head for Sweetgrass which added another 2 hours to the journey.

The border crossing at Sweetgrass was interesting, I pulled up to the boothe and I was promptly asked why i was in the US.  I told them i was recovering a vehicle for a friend.  The next question asked if the trailer or the Dodge belong to me, so I was trying to cross the border in a truck that did not belong to me, towing a trailer that did not belong to me, carrying a truck that also did not belong to me.  So, dear reader, do you think that Canada's finest were going to wish me a "Good Night" and send me on my merry way.  Well the simple answer is NO.

She (the Border Guard) was actually very understanding although she did ask a lot of questions to which i did not have very good answers (apparently).  So we were invited to come into the building and explain why a British national was driving a truck which belonged to a friend, was towing a trailer (rented) and carrying a truck to which I had the license documents but could not remember the surname of the owner..... at 01:30 in the morning, trying to get from USA to Canada.

It took about 20 minutes for her to search the (recovered) vehicle for contraband which i completely agreed with and was actually very impressed with her diligence.  She then wished us a "Good Morning" and we were off on the last leg of our journey to Raymond.

So we hit Raymond at just before 02:30, parked up at the bottom of the drive, went in the house and immediately cracked open a "Cold One".

What a day !!!!!
